100 Days Project

Nanogirl: Star Science

Nanogirl wants to find 100 friends to do science experiments with her to prove that no matter who you are or what your education level, you can always have fun with science.

Day 16:

Tristan tests if the lightproof milk bottles really are lightproof

Tristan Pang is just 12 years old, but he is pretty good at science and maths.  So good he started Maths at university this year, 6 years earlier that most of us!

Tristan wanted to know if the lightproof milk bottles were really lightproof, so he managed to get some time on the HeNe laser at the University of Auckland and tested if visible light passed through the bottle by placing the bottle between the laser and a light sensor.  He found that the light did not pass through the lightproof bottle, but did pass through a normal milk bottle.

If you haven't seen Tristan speak you can see his TEDxYouth talk here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbMKX4J03nY
